Wind season in Watamu
Watamu, Kenya, is a kitesurfing haven, offering the perfect combination of consistent winds and a magnificent ten-kilometer stretch of pristine white sandy beach.
In Watamu, you’ll find two distinct wind seasons. The Kaskazi season, from December to April, boasts refreshing northeast winds blowing at approximately 20–25 knots. These winds kickstart early in the morning, providing ample time for exciting sessions on the water.
The Kuzi season, spanning from June to September, is renowned as the windiest time of the year in Watamu. During this period, expect powerful south-east winds, consistently blowing at least 25 knots, and often exceeding 30 knots. Situated near the Equator, Watamu benefits from remarkably dependable winds. Moreover, the cross-onshore nature of the wind direction makes this destination an exemplary choice for kitesurfing enthusiasts.
While the Kaskazi season can bring temperatures soaring up to 36 °C, the Kuzi season offers a slightly cooler climate. Regardless of the season, the water temperature remains a comfortable 25-30 °C year-round, ensuring an enjoyable kitesurfing experience in Watamu’s tropical waters.
